The South of the River Community Band formed in 1990 as a dozen intergenerational church members from Savage, Minnesota, who wanted to play instrumental music for church services. After only a year, the band acquired a director and opened membership to the wider community in order to attract a larger variety of instruments. Since our humble beginnings, The South of the River Community Band has grown to over sixty members who range in age from teenagers to grandparents and play a diverse assortment of band instruments. We don't require auditions for membership, so anyone with a band instrument and desire to play is welcome to join us. We practice weekly on Sunday afternoons from September through May and perform both indoor and outdoor concerts for the enjoyment of residents across the Twin Cities metro area.
We perform Fall, Spring and Holiday concerts at concert halls, civic centers and nursing homes primarily within the south metro area and then conclude our concert season with a "Concert in the Park" series that is performed outdoors at various band shells in the Twin Cities. We play a wide variety of musical styles such as marches, big band, show tune medleys and other standard pieces that appeal to all ages.
